Junior Sensu chats Tobi Soprano

This is the 5th time we have now booked Tobi for Sensu. 6 if you count our Party in BCN at off Sonar. The first time we ever booked Tobi his flight got cancelled and he had no way of making his next performance in Leeds. Fact not fiction I was sat in the bath nursing my thoughts from the night before and he calls to say he is stranded at the airport. Leeds is about three hours away and my friend is a fast driver. So we filled a car and decided to ferry Tobi to Leeds and drive back up after his set. I will not go in to the details of the adventure, however it was not our last.

As you start to spend more time with a DJ you book your conversations start to sway away from the normal chatter of music and clubs as you start to understand more about them as a person. We could have chosen a million different topics to discuss with our good friend Tobi, that could have included FC Bayern Munich, Modulators, Smoothies/Juices, Family, Philip Seymour Hoffman………the list goes on.

Following a short conversation regarding the death of actors recently the topic of James Gandolfini and the Sopranos came up. We were delighted to hear the Tobinator is a fan.

So rather then get all sentimental, we thought we’d ask him 6 questions about the best TV Series ever created!

***HEADS UP IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE SHOW THERE ARE A FEW SPOILERS IN HERE***

Boom!

1) Why are you a Sopranos fan?

I always heard about the hype with the TV series……of course my friends were talking about it . In 2007 my friend Clé recommended Prison Break to me. I started to watch it and loved it. But later on I didn’t like the fact that the story never ends. Then I started with a couple of other series like Californication, Dexter, Homeland, Sherlock and also the fantastic Game Of Thrones.

I became kind of a TV series junkie. But I always knew that everything started in the late nineties with The Sopranos. After James Gandolfini‘s tragic death I bought the whole 6 seasons on iTunes and had a great time over the summer/fall 2013 watching it. It was absolutely brilliant. The story touched me so deeply that it was like living in this family until the last episode.

2) Who is your favourite Sopranos Character and why?

Tony of course is my favourite. I loved Dr Melfi and Carmela as well as Anthony Jnr. But the most impressing character was
Christopher Moltisanti. His character showed the whole drama about the antagonism and disruption which the Mafia people had to deal with. Played superbly by Michael Imperioli.

3) What is your favourite Sopranos scene and why?

There are way to many to mention only one.. so many impressive and touching moments. Unbelievable!

This is one of ours:

4) The Sopranos has several funny moments often dark humour. What are your favourites?

The funny and erotic where the moments when Tony confessed his attraction to Melfi in this room…Also Carmela when she fell in love with this guy from Naples. There were so many.

5) Michael Imperioli who plays Christopher Moltisanti wrote a number of episodes as a guest writer. You, Tobi Neumann has been given the chance to write an episode. Give us the plot summary in a paragraph.

A episode where a simple German criminal appears in their world and creates a big mess due the difference of mentalities and gets shot at the end. Something like this would have been funny. What I learned from the Sopranos was the conservative way of life and thinking of the Italo-Americans.

Beside that they are killers that follow a very strict old school way of life. For me as a child from the seventies, growing up with all this emancipation was strange. So in my story I would probably let my world clash with their world in a funny way. Of course with the bad end for the German.

6) If there was one final episode after the series finale what would have happened and what are your feelings overall on how things ended?

The end was not an end.. but I think that was the perfect way to finish. The real end was left to the imagination of the viewers.
A great way to finish something which actually is not easy to finish. Of course most of them were dead at the end. Not many
characters were left. Tony had to die.. but it was left open. A Hitchcock way to end. Great!
