Sub Club Live: Redbull Revolutions in Sound

I AM: Brackles

Brackles is a long standing Rinse FM favourite whose sets encompass House, Garage, UK Funky as a starting point. He’s up tonight playing at i AM’s Garage Paradigm party and here’s a few daft questions the boys put his way earlier.

Part 1 – The garage section.

1. Did you ever play in any bands? Did they practise in garages?

Nah, was never really into band music when I was young.

2. Whats your favourite tool you have in your garage?

Live in london so don’t have a garage!

3. Have you ever fannied about on “Garage Band”?

Naw

4. Who is Burial? Is he under your garage? Is this possible because inner london has small gardens?

Again no garden because of the London thing. So it seems unlikely he’s buried here

Part 2 – The funky/lionel section.

1. What’s your favourite blend of tea? With a Lionel Richtea?

BKKY-ASCIAIsYIZ

I’m on the Red Bush at the minute. probs not a rich tea, would go for some taste the difference cookies though

2. What song puts the funk in Funktion One?

Sensu took 5 minutes to chat to Steve about Glasgow, summer plans and his Poker flat…

Do you enjoy playing Glasgow, if so why Steve? Why?

I do, i always have a great time in Glasgow. People are always really into the music and they know how to party.

What is your fondest memory of the Sub Club?

Me being on the dancefloor on a new years eve enjoying the music and thinking: “I’d rather keep on dancing than start to play” the vibe on the dancefloor there is very special.

How does Glasgow compare to other cities around the world?

From a dj’s perspective you don’t have a huge crowd, but a really loving one and the city has a history in house and techno and you can definitely feel that.

What do you like about the current electronic music scene?

There is so much great music out there, where do i start?

What do you dislike about the current electronic music scene?

The fact that very few djs are playing really good music. Most DJs are simply focusing on one style (usually the one that’s hyped the most) and they forget to look left or right. They kinda play what works the best, instead of having a sound of their own. Not so many originals out there anymore. A lot of big name artists would rather do public relations and play the popularity game than focus on the music.

If you could arrange a night choosing 5 dj’s past or present to join you, who would you have play?

Laurent Garnier, Deetron, Dixon, Larry Heard, Klaus Stockhausen

Are you hyped for the rest of the summer plans? Sonar & Get Physical in Ibiza…

Yes, the summer is – hopefully – coming soon. It is freezing again in berlin, but luckily the Sonar weekend is not too far away and we have another Poker Flat and 2020 Vision Showcase coming up, this year we teamed up with Supernature for a bigger showcase! First stop is in Ibiza in 10 days at Space. But yes i am playing a few times at Vista for the Get Physical guys as well this year which I am excited about because we always have such a great time together.

https://www.youtu.be/U1nOy5ljoxc

What are the 5 essentials that you will be taking to Ibiza?

Talking about music or items? ;) i don’t know yet, every week there are new ones released, so they might add up.

What’s the latest from your Poker Flat? Still winning ;)?

We are holding a straight flush, something i can’t really talk about yet, it is a compilation, but it is a very special one and it’s coming from the past, but it still sounds great today, you’ll see…

Before that we have a re-release of another classic track with new remixes. Foremost Poets – Reasons 2 Be Dismal with Dixon and Motorcitysoul remixes, plus a special edit by myself. Also a remix package lined up for Daniel Dexter’s Focus On, with mixes by Ian Pooley, Uner, Kollektiv Turmstrasse and David Keno. Jackpot should be ours!! Hehe

Limited advanced tickets for Sunday are still available from either
RA or Ticket Scotland

Happy Birthday Subculture

With Harri & Domenic at the helm Subculture has endured like no other club night in the world and is now firmly established as the longest running weekly underground night on the planet. On May 4th we will celebrate [3]19 years of Subculture Saturdays, as they continue to go from strength to strength nearly two decades on. As testament to their integrity and longevity, Harri & Domenic always steer clear of trends and fads and remain true to their roots, serving up a flawless selection of house and techno to the clued up masses the world over as well as in our dear green place called Glasgow. In true birthday style we have invited one of our favourite DJs and truest inspirations to join us, the one and only [4]DJ Sneak. One of house music’s genuine pioneers, DJ Sneak has the passion and drive to keep house music alive all on his own and as the self-proclaimed House Gangster, he has more than helped shape the course that dance music has taken over the last 20 years. Since the early 90s his music has strongly influenced crossover acts such Daft Punk, Basement Jaxx and Armand Van Helden as well fellow underground heroes Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and Greenskeepers, taking in a whole generation of Chicago DJs that owe so much to his production style and DJ aesthetic.

The 5AM licence has just been confirmed and there are still some advanced tickets available here.

Having begun his DJ’ing career in 1983, Sneak continues to be at the top of his game. His non stop beat bumpin’ sets are a one of a kind experience in the electronic music circuit and are backed up by a barrage of top quality releases on some of the most consistent and exciting labels operating today. His signature sound of funky filtered disco-influenced house and tough, jacking beats has revolutionised and redefined house music for well over 20 years and his influence continues to be be felt today.

Responsible for over 120 12”s, singles, EPs and albums, it’s a near impossible task to sum up DJ Sneak’s career in any sort of bite sized chunk. And that in itself is what makes him our perfect birthday guest as he never sits still and is always evolving, collaborating with those he works with best and releasing music directly to the people that want it most. He’s behind so many classics of our dance floor we’ve lost count and even if we tried to keep up we would not know where to start, his history runs so deep. Just like Subculture, he’s here to stay and we would not have it any other way.

Now let’s get to 20!

Domenic picks his top 3 20:20 Vision Tracks

As a regular visitor to the Sub Club since the early nineties, Back To Basic’s longest serving resident DJ and 20:20 Vision label supremo Ralph Lawson knows what it takes to the rock the house at Subculture.

His sound has been a massive influence on us at Sub Club HQ and there’s always excitement brewing when he comes back to play. Tonight sees him bring his trademark vibes back to the basement with copious support from our own trusted residents Harri & Domenic.

We asked Domenic to dig as deep as he’s known to do and share with us his three favourite tracks from Ralph’s 20:20 Vision imprint…

1. Volga Select – Les Annees Des Plobs (Joshua’s Mix)

https://youtu.bePoGySsJjOtY

2. Random Factor – Reversal Input

3. Wulf n Bear – Raptures of the deep

Ralph’s particular empathy with the Sub Club faithful and the Glasgow public in general, ensures that this will be one of those nights where we all lose ourselves in the music and that warm and dreamy feeling takes over on the dance floor as it gathers pace throughout the night.

Advanced tickets are still available until 5pm here.

Focus on Deetron

Operating under his Deetron moniker since the early nineties, Swiss national Sam Geiser has dedicated most of his life to making and playing dance music in its truest form to those that appreciate it most. With this in mind, we can’t overstate how excited we are to have him back at [2]Subculture tomorrow with his immaculate mixing skills and a distinctive melodic, take on techno. As the night approaches and for the uninitiated amongst us, we thought we’d get to grips with some selected highlights from his musical career, treat your ears to some bar raising DJ mixes and share our love of one of our favourite electronic music artists of recent years.

As prolific as they come, he has released on labels such as Intec, Music Man and Ongaku and remixed everyone worth their salt along the way. From Romanthony, Joey Negro and Aeroplane to Funk D’Void, Gerd, Joris Voorn, George Fitzgerald and Miguel Migs; they’ve all requested the silky, sleek and floor shattering reworks Deetron has become renowned for since he first announced himself way back in 1998.

https://youtu.be/UE3GtNMw2gA

Following his debut artist album ‘Twisted’, released in 2006, he found himself at the forefront of the the global electronic music scene, securing his name as one of the most excitingly reliable producers and DJs out there. Consistently excellent collaborations with a diverse range of musicians have brought his music to the attention of much more than just the techno aficionados of this world. Studio sessions with Seth Troxler and Hercules & Love Affair stand out as highlights but it’s his solo material that really sets it off, saving the very best for himself before letting us in on the act. Well that and his DJ sets. After all, that’s where it counts. On the floor, in the club and aimed squarely at moving your feet.

Imagine every club you’ve ever wanted to go to…he’s played there. Fabric in London, Womb in Tokyo, Social Club in Paris, Berghain in Berlin. Oh yeah, and Sub Club in Glasgow. Not that we really forgot of course and judging by your response last time he played for us, we doubt he has either.

He’s been known to back up his exemplary live sets with DJ mixes for all the big hitters. Radio 1’s Essential mix, FACT Magazine, Resident Advisor, Mixmag…they’ve all had him and as yet not one of us has seen it fit to complain. It’s safe to say he’ll keep recording these DJ mixes and we’ll keep turning them up just like he intended.  In between times, as long as he drops by the club every now and then for our musical entertainment then we’ll go through life with Subculture Saturdays to look forward to. And who could blame us?

Ralph Lawson: Glasgow / Leeds Connection

For the latest in a series of guest interviews, the ever dependable and investigative Synth have taken the time to chat to our good friend Ralph Lawson ahead of his return to [2]Subculture on Saturday.

As a regular visitor to the Sub Club since the early nineties, Back To Basic’s longest serving resident DJ and 20:20 Vision label supremo Ralph Lawson knows what it takes to the rock the house at No. 22. This weekend he is joining Harri and Domenic in the booth, for a truly best of British affair. You know you are in safe hands when three of the UK’s most enduring dj talents are taking you through till 4 a.m.

Ralph’s particular empathy with the Sub Club faithful and the Glasgow public in general, ensures that Saturday will be one of those nights where we all lose ourselves in the music and that warm and dreamy feeling takes over on the dance floor as it gathers pace throughout the night.

Back To Basics first launched in Leeds back in 1991 and you’ve been throwing some incredible parties every year since. How do you feel about Leeds being regarded by some as the new house capital of the UK? I get the feeling it’s much like Glasgow where there is a great community vibe from its relative size?

Yes I think Glasgow would have a strong claim to being house capital of the UK. Leeds can settle for house capital of England. We do try to stay pretty tight in Leeds, there is a new strong creative community working out of the East End and pushing the city limits further East as well as pushing the city forward creatively. There is a new building where loads of cool people work under one roof called Munro House. I was lucky enough to find it last year, I have been really excited by what is getting produced in there over the last year from music to design, fashion, photography, architecture and digital marketing.

You’ll be back in Ibiza this summer for your We Love… residency at Space and of course you famously played the Discoteca as 2020Soundsystem back in 2010, is Space still one of the best places to play in the world and how do you feel about the island’s evolution over the last few years? Is there too much money floating about?

Space is for sure still one of the very best clubs in the world and an incredible place to play. Money has been there for years, it’s not new. There are really cool grass roots things happening as well, the problem is the main clubs are so powerful that when things get too big on an underground level they either eat them up and spit them out or have them closed down.

It’s fair to say that 2020 Vision is probably one of the most prolific labels in modern club music, with a keen ear for true talent. How much are you involved with the A&R side of things in 2013 and what do you think has attributed to the label’s longevity?

Well we’re up to release 250 in 20 years on the main label but that doesn’t include albums or our sub labels such as Redux, Fina, Infant, Dotbleep and a host of under the counter white labels that you probably didn’t know was us! I mainly focus on A/R now…

Considering your heritage and your passion for house music, how do you really feel about it at the moment? Obviously some regard it as being in its healthiest state for a long time and 2020 Vision certainly reflects that, but there is also this increasing commercialisation, do you think true house music is immune to commercial saturation?

Yes I think house music is alive and well in 2013 – unbelievably!

I’ve been heard a lot of great things about your new Beat project which fuses quality dining with quality DJs over a whole night. Where did the inspiration come for Beat? I can imagine it must be great watching the evening progress and everything unfold?

Yes it’s been a new challenge and a great buzz. I met chef Tom Van Zeller through a friend called Wes Gill from The Electric Press, a band signed to 2020Vision. I went to his restaurant and loved it and found out that he listened to house music in the kitchen and loved what I did so we got talking. Music and food are so closely linked and we felt we had a new angle on how to get people to enjoy both in cool spaces. It’s been working exactly as we planned it. People get a good feed then get straight on the floor. No need to move venues as it’s all in the same space.

Finally, you first played the Sub Club with Domenic way back in 1992 and you’ll be joining both him and Harri later this month at Subculture, what memories have you got from that first night and how do you feel coming back to play over 20 years later?

Yes we played for the first time ever both on the same night. Dom was so nervous he had to take a Valium before he went on! His hand was shaking playing his first record. Well I’ve been back many times in those 20 years so it’s a case of focusing full every time on making sure I get a call back! The Sub is very important to me and I know I have to play well as you have the best house music residents in the world there. Dom makes me nervous as he has given me so many great records over the years so I have to return the favour.

There are still some £10 Adv. Tickets available to catch Ralph alongside Harri & Domenic at Subculture.
