RA – EX.232 Harri And Domenic – on life behind the booth.

For the past 20 years, James Harrigan and Domenic Cappello have spent most Saturday nights behind the booth at the Sub Club. They started Subculture at the famed Glasgow nightspot back in 1994, which makes their residency one of the world’s longest-running house and techno nights. (For more about the Sub Club, check out RA and SONOS’s recent ORIGINS film about Jackmaster.) Both were already ingrained in Glasgow’s nightlife before Subculture started—Harrigan ran a Sub Club residency called Atlantis with Slam’s Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle, while Cappello had developed an early passion for electro and breakdancing.

When they popped by Resident Advisor’s London office in late December, Aaron Coultate found the pair in jovial mood, and it was little surprise: they were at the end of a milestone a year that saw them play some of Europe’s key nightclubs—Trouw, Panorama Bar, fabric—as well as celebrate the 20th anniversary of Subculture.

The Revenge on his Hardware for Hogmanay Live

The Revenge‘s debut album is due for release on his own label (Roar Groove) in March and he’ll be throwing down a few live shows around then. Harri & Domenic are totally delighted to add the world exclusive premier of Graeme’s live set to our Hogmanay party bill, as they bring 2014 and Subculture’s phenomenal 20th anniversary year to a close.

A3_NYE-WEB

The Revenge is equally excited: “When the opportunity came up to do the first show at the Subbie it was a massive honour and the perfect place to start … the deep end! Between myself and my live partner Paul, the live setup consists of a combination of software and hardware that mirrors what I use in the studio.”

Here is a quick run down of 3 pieces of handpicked hardware he’ll be using for the live show on NYE…

Moog Voyager

99% of my basslines start right here. When you require something hefty in your bottom end, this is your man. It’s a bit overkill for the live stuff in all honesty as it’s got more twiddle-ability than I really need, so as I begin to tour the show outside of Glasgow I might need to employ one of it’s children. It’s got a nice blue light with a dimmer switch too.

MOOG VOYAGER

Roland TR-909

Probably don’t really need to explain this distinguished gentleman. He usually resides in the studio these days as he’s getting on a bit, but I’ll be bringing him out for the Sub Club show. In terms of house / techno drums, the 909 has you covered. The newer TR-8 is actually a lot more practical and sturdy for on the road, but it’s nice to get the classic out of the garage for a wee run around on special occasions.

ROLAND TR909

E&S DJR400

I travel with this mixer to most of my DJ gigs and it’s become an integral part of the live stuff now too. I have a real feel for this mixer from using it all the time which really helps as I started to bring the live show together. I’ve modified it with different pots from the original to make it more comfortable for me and it has sends and returns that I use to feed a Moogerfooger Delay unit. For the live stuff I use each channel as a different bus – i.e. drums, bass, leads, vocals.

Up the Road with Fuse London

On Monday December 29th we’re joining forces with one of London’s finest electronic party heavyweights, FUSE, for a trademark 6 hour showcase with guests Enzo Siragusa, Seb Zito, Rossko and Ivan Kutz.

The residents invited us up the road for some after hours listening…

Seb Zito:

Giles Smith dropped this at Secretsundaze & it’s been in my record bag ever since.

All time fave Garage track from 96, timeless classic.

Kick back & zone out to the pharcyde.

Rossko:

This could be the reason why I do what I do. Remember dancing like crazy with my friend after sneaking into in his older brothers bedroom to play his records – can still picture all the rave flyers on his wall and his JVC stereo! Such a melting pot of genres and sounds. House party starter.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9j4iDbsJBhI

Used to MC to this when I was 15 kicking around on pirate radio, I still drop it now 15 years later in my sets. Timeless.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIDYkAWMGes

One for the heads. Lets get serious.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQPtya9D1GU

Some one recently sent this to me. Touched me deeply. Helped me leave this universe for 5mins 36 sec. Thats what after parties are for.

Enzo Siragusa:

I’ve had a few body gurns to this one after a good rave, back at home or on someone’s sofa at an afterparty.

https://youtu.be/rGE-isHqVGk

I’ve had this record for 15 years and played it out for the first time at an intimate villa afters in Ibiza last summer, love it!

Used to play Miura back in the day, but it’s all about the flip side of this record for the afters.

Ivan Kutz:

This was fired on out the blue from one of my friends a few years back at an after party in my gaff, tears of joy were had! The perfect sing along track with good mates, it’s one to fire on when you think the party is starting die down, second wind material!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxBc6JjKSWU

One of my favourite Daft Punk tunes, always goes off with the taps aff and bouncing up and down on the coffee table – happy vibes!

I’m a huge fan of the old blues and no afters would be complete without a bit of the big man the Howlin’ Wolf, frightening set of tonsils!

I was brought up listening to happy hardcore and there is nothing better than getting brought back to your youth, this track reminds me of when I used to bounce about Archaos unders in my early teens thinking I was wild!

When I’m with all my mates we always seem to dip into our past and bring back the memories. In my late teens I turned to trance and hard trance and this track by Scot Project sticks out like a sore thumb, regardless of what music you are into you can’t argue with the production that Scot Project puts into this track and all the others he produces. This track always makes my hairs on my arms stand on end, don’t know if it would go down well in a room full of strangers these days mind you.

A right mish mash of afterparty tuneage there from the Fuse party crew with some proper dance floor classics thrown in beside blues legend Howlin’ Wolf, and topped off with a couple of memorably dodgy teenage hardcore floor fillers.

Advance tickets for Sub Club presents Fuse on Monday the 29th  are on sale from Resident Advisor & in store or online from Tickets Scotland.

Chez Damier chats 20 years of Subculture

This is it, bringing 2014 and Subculture’s phenomenal 20th anniversary year to a close, Harri and Domenic bring down the curtain, and no doubt the whole house, with the mighty Chez Damier front, centre and very much to the fore for NYE. Through KMS, The Music Institute, Prescription and much more, Chez Damier has rocked, released and run so many inroads and influences across Chicago and Detroit’s subcultural musical landscape and legacy that it’s impossible to quantify properly on paper.

Ahead of his return to Glasgow for the end of the 20 Years Of Subculture celebrations, we chatted to Chez about the early days, his motivation, New Year resolutions and Subculture memories…

The term “house music” – there are as many stories about its genesis as there are records that fall into the genre. What are your thoughts on where it came from? What does it meant to you?

To be truthful I believe “house music” is just the evolution of disco and early electronic music, the only reason I might believe this is that I was there when the transition went from Disco to Italian electronic to UK dance music of the early 80’s prior to House Music.

Click HERE to watch Chez talk about the movement of electronic Dance Music…

Screen Shot 2014-12-15 at 16.20.33

Was your love for house music mainly fed back in Chicago, Detroit or New York in the 80s? What did you find there in the small hours and was this your first proper clubbing experience?

I was very thankful to experience the beginning days of Frankie Knuckles arrival to Chicago, to the underground Club scene in Detroit to the fruitful era of the club scene in New York. I had missed a few opportunities to experience the “Paradise Garage”, I did manage to experience “Traxx”, “Red Zone” and “Sound Factory” bar and Club. For me I would for sure not be doing what I do in the music business had it not been for those experiences. To explain more, we would need the audio version of my reply to fully get an understanding.

https://soundcloud.com/lhanson/frankie-knuckles-at-sound-1

After all this time in the industry how do you keep motivated? Do you ever feel you have “been there, seen that, done that? Do you feel fortunate to still have a passion for it?

Oh, I keep motivated because of the love and passion I have for mankind. There is a lot I have not done or seen and would like to experience. When I think of the freedom and the smiles that people experience I feel more like a Minister of Music, and feeling like` the club is my night time Church, where the healing takes place.

How important is the role of the resident DJ?

It’s very important, these resident are the real teachers of this culture, the rest of us are like guest speakers to their classrooms. If there were not for the resident dj, there would be not need for the rest of us who are merely the guest.

Why do you think Subculture has latest as long as it has?

Because we the people need it, in fact We should be running the world.

What was your first impression of our Harri & Domenic’s Subculture?

WOW! Seeing that I have had the opportunity to be a guest of their’s for almost as long as the party has been running, I am very thankful for them. I told Harri that if I look into history he might be the longest running Master in the game that is active in the culture at the moment.

What are your expectations of returning to the party and to Glasgow?

There are no expectations, one of the things I have loved about Glasgow over the last 20 years is that the people are real, and that’s the real deal.

If you weren’t on tour at NYE, what would you be doing?

Well I have not had a NYE at home for the last 6 years, I would not know, maybe having a quite time with my wife.

Do you have any New Years resolutions for 2015?

Yes many, and one is to be more of help to those that are in need. I would love to create a foundation for electronic artists and producers to help them after the hype is gone and they need some assistance financially, mentally and emotionally when times get hard. I have been thinking on this for many years, so hopefully I will get the missing pieces to this puzzle this coming year.

Do you have a particular birthday message for Harri & Domenic?

Happy Birthdays guys, you have made such an impact for over 2 decades and I am honoured to be a part of this time among you. I might give you a Happy Birthday solo (lol!)

Chez recorded this mix for Harri & Domenic ahead of New Year’s Eve. Listen up…

Chez will join Harri & Domenic for the 20YSC Hogmanay Party with additional support from our own boy wonder Telford, and a special world exclusive debut live set from another local legend, The Revenge.

ÂME CHATS 20 YEARS OF SUBCULTURE & HOME LISTENING

Well and truly part of the international Subculture family, Kristian Beyer pitches up on Saturday 27th for an exclusive five hour extended set in familiar surroundings.

Voted No.3 in the worldwide Resident Advisor DJ poll just last week, the Innervisions co-founder and Âme DJ should need no hard-sell, but suffice to say turning the entire night over to him is testament to the high esteem in which he is held by Harri & Dom and the rest of the Subbie team. There was no way 20 Years of Subculture was going to finish without an appearance from one of our all time favourite DJs.

Ahead of what promises to be a very special festive Subculture, we caught up with Kristian on a more relaxed domestic musical tip. In contrast to the sounds we all associate with his legendary Innervisions residency at Panorama Bar (or last summer’s World Cup beach parties in Brazil for that matter), Kristian was happy to share some personal home listening vibes along with a bit of chat about 20 Years of Subculture and a special birthday message for Harri & Domenic…

“Seeing as I still buy and collect tons of CDs to which I am listening at home I would choose the five I listened to the most in recent months…”

1.Francis Bebey ‘Psychedelic Sanza 1982-1985’

“Fantastic new reissue of the later material of this French African artist…trippy stuff.”

2.Yoshio Machida ‘Steelpan Improvisations: 2001-2008′

“I just love steel drums and this is a fantastic piece which even my daughter loves a lot.”

3. Deutsche Wertarbeit ‘Deutsche Wertarbeit.’

”First time on CD as I had it on vinyl for many years…German prototype electronic music from the early Eighties.”

4. Land observations ‘The Grand Tour’

”Great album on mute which doesn’t sound like the typical mute album…more like a modern version of John Fahey, my favourite guitar player.”

5.Ariel Kalma ‘An Evolutionary Music’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21c_CfjHQmM

“First time available form his archive…a true ambient pioneer!”

Kristian has beaten a path to our stable door many a time over the years, no doubt following some wandering star, with Âme’s wise man first invited to step into the Subbie manger over 10 years ago. It goes without saying there is always room at Harri & Domenic’s inn for one of the Kings of Innervisions.

As you know this month brings our 20 year’s of Subculture celebrations to an end. Why do you think Subculture has latest as long as it has?

“Dedication everywhere from the staff to the crowd to the DJs make it possible.”

12 (1)

How important is the role of the resident?

“Nowadays it’s rare that you see good residents who built up an own crowd over years so it’s always refreshing to come back to the Sub Club for seeing this dying out culture kept alive.”

What was your first impression of our Harri & Domenic’s Subculture?

“I already heard a lot before so I wasn’t surprised it was more like a confirmation of what I was being told. They are two different characters but the chemistry and the respect in between them makes them a great team.”

20YSC H&D

What are your expectations of returning to the party and to Glasgow?

“Just having a great time like always!!”

Do you have a particular birthday message for Harri & Domenic?

4.000

“Please let it be 20 more years:-)))) and hopefully Celtic will make some buzz again in the Champions League in the following years!!! [Obviously Kristian is keeping in with Dom on that one ;-)]”

There are a handful of advance tickets left from RA & in store or online at TICKETS SCOTLAND. With Kristian sharing his own personal frankincense and myrrh for the full 5 hours this is already promising to be ‘one of those ones’ !

Show gets to know Tiptoes

Show returns to the Sub Club on Thursday December the 18th with the London based duo Dense & Pika playing a 3 hour set. Joining Illyus this month on the warm up is Tiptoes. Eager to debut his new sound, we asked him some questions to try and shed a little light on what is in store for us.

What (or who) is tiptoes?

Tiptoes is a new project from a time-served deep house producer – the premise of which is not to create mystique in anonymity or anything like that – the desire is simply that people should come check out the music first with no pre-conceived notions of who is behind it or what it should sound like. It’s the age old mantra of letting the trax doing the talking……

Are you a short arse and need to stand on your tiptoes to see the crowd / DJ?

Absolutely – I’ve caught myself doing this a few times while in situ! Clubs these days are full of giant kids – 6ft on average – they’re taller, better fed and have better teeth than previous generations – so I’m a shrimp by comparison.

What is your direction with this project?

Primarily it’s writing music that some people maybe wouldn’t expect from me, music that shows every aspect of what I want to make, not just sticking rigidly to one style. There are some beat-driven raw bass tracks that are most definitely house/techno club oriented alongside some hip-hop and looser grooves. The sound overall is sample based – I try not to make tracks too polished, retaining that rough sampled vibe to it – slightly retro. I’ve gained most of my know-how from sampling, taking from all the things that have influenced me along the way and I think it’s this approach to music that determines my sound most. The best music I’ve done has always been something. I don’t think about – it just happens – if it feels right, it is.

If you were making comparisons, who would you compare yourself/tiptoes to?

Difficult one that, I’m pleading the 5th – I’ll let other people make comparisons. What I will say though is that I grew up on disco, jazz, soul, funk… This for me was and is the foundation. The first artists I came across who were making house and garage music based on these fundamentals were guys like MAW, Ashley Beedle, Moodymann, Kerri Chandler, Theo Parrish, Nick Holder, Pepe Bradock, Sneak, Derrick Carter etc – and they’ve all had a big influence on me.

Who are you feeling just now and why?

Every day there’s a new discovery, someone I come across that I’ve never heard of before that is making incredible music – that’s the upside of the internet. There are so many people out there just now making killer stuff, I could literally reel off a hundred names! For argument’s sake let’s throw out a few: Max Graef, Glenn Astro, Alden Tyrell, Borrowed Identity, Doc Daneeka, Andres, MCDE, Catz n Dogz, Dense & Pika, Conforce, Fjaak, Gerd, Whim-Ee, Nicholas, Phoenix Knight, Maya Jane Coles, Oliver Deutschmann, Daniel Avery…… I mean I could go on and on.

Locally, I’m tight with a few friends such as Mia Dora, Illyus & Barrientos who are fantastic producers cultivating their own styles and are currently enjoying some richly-deserved success. We all work with each other and everyone learns from everyone else, there’s a real crew type mentality going on. The key thing about all of this is we’re all on a similar wavelength – if you’re into this type of music – it’s not just a passing fad, it’s what your whole life revolves around. It’s not about money or any of that. You just hook up with a bunch of friends, everyone’s on the same page and you’re all like weans in a sweetie shop vibin’ over a new record.

Whats your take on the current state of house music / scene?

I think it’s in an incredibly healthy place right now. As ever the real innovation is happening in the underground, where producers put their own personal stamp on things so there’s always loads of interesting material and new avenues opening up. For the first time in years – thanks mainly to the massive resurgence in garage – there’s also a clear pathway to commercial success – if that’s your aim – as the shiny stuff is topping the charts as well. Positives all round, no matter where you’re coming from or heading to.

Are you looking forward to playing the Sub Club?

Without a doubt, it’s an institution 27 years deep for a reason. I don’t think i’ve ever had a bad night out in there. B2B with Illyus will be good fun and i’m really looking forward to seeing Dense & Pika, not had a chance to catch them live yet.

Will you be able to touch the ceiling?

I’ll do my level best but a set of stilts or at the very least a puddy up may be required. You never know if it goes well I might end up like the geezer who did the impromptu crowd surf at the recent boiler room night…..

Meet the fly club residents – Mia Dora

Fly Club bring it as Mia Dora go all night long for Fly Club’s St Andrew’s day party this Sunday. Drawing on a deep well of house, techno and hip hop this fine pair already boast early productions with full props and airplay from Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson and Rob Da Bank amongst others. From their damn straight Roots Manuva remix to releases for High Sheen and Moda Black, as well as the release of the ‘You In The Future’ EP on Kerri Chandler’s highly respected MadTech Records, over keen interest has been building up with their every record drop.

Our weekend Fly guy’s caught up with Al and Rob to chat over posh nosh, holidays and party records…

1. Why/Who/How did you end up DJ’ing?

It was a natural progression from never letting anyone else choose the tunes at parties.

2. How would you normally spend your Sunday night?

Propping up the bar in Distill with a Bloody Mary in hand. Sunday is hangover day.

3. Best hangover restaurants in Glasgow?

Apart from Distill there’s a great little place in Maryhill called Posh Nosh. It’s a real Glasgow caf’. A roll with egg and sausage from Posh Nosh is a guaranteed hangover cure. We’ve spent many a morning there trying to piece our lives back together after a heavy night.

4. 5 people you would invite to your party dead or alive?

The infamous Pete the Tash (he’s bringing the booze), Louis Theroux (he’s bringing the banter), Simon Amstell (he doesn’t need to bring anything), Heston Blumenthal (he’s gonna be cooking) Mr Muscle (he’s on clean up duties.)

Thunder Disco & Genius of Time chat Aciiiiiid.

Ahead of this Friday’s Thunder Disco. We caught up with Swedish hardware analogue enthusiasts Genius of Time for some rapid Q&A surrounding their new Acid Live Set.

Firstly, congratulations on completing the new live set. What inspired you to focus on building an acid set after the success of your previous live set?

Thanks! We got asked by Corsica Studios a while back if we were interested in doing an acid/tribute to the 303 set. Neither of us had been making music with a 303 before but we were really excited about the challenge. It was more or less thought to be a one time thing, but we’re getting really excited about this setup now… so let’s see.

What would be your all time favourite acid tracks?

We´re actually gonna play a few covers of acid tracks we really like in our set, so we suggest you come and check out the show to find out!

How has it been living in different countries and putting together this set?

The first stage of preparation was deciding on what gear to use, how to sync everything up and get hold of a 303 clone, technical stuff like that.

bass-bot-tt-303-synthesizer

So those things were fine to do away from each other. But we could not really work on the actual show separately so we´ve been meeting up in Berlin and Gothenburg a couple of times leading up to this weekend to practice. We want to have much room for improvisation and spontanity in this set, but that requires us to be well prepared and very confident with our set-up. We´ve played a bit less the last few months to get more time to spend in the studio, so there’s not been any problems really.

We are always interested to hear what other music artists are listening to at the moment. Any tracks or producers that stand out for you recently?

Fjäder and Kalawila are two new artists from Sweden that you should check out if you haven´t already.

https://soundcloud.com/fj-der/theawakening

Picture this… we are travelling through the ethereal Swedish landscape on the Arctic Circle Express. What 4 tracks would you play for our journey?

Sweeden ethereal Swedish landscape on the Arctic Circle Express

Klabbes Bank – Jämtland

Decay Product No.6

Arvo Pärt – Fratres, For Strings And Percussion

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eNFL4Mz2ISY

Jesper Dahläck – Lonesome Dub

How do you feel about your world debut of the acid set being in the Sub Club?

We’ve heard a lot of good things about Sub Club and it’s sound system. We’re ready to try it out :)

FRIDAY WILL WITNESS AN EXCLUSIVE DEBUT LIVE ACID SET FROM GENIUS OF TIME, TO MAKE SURE YOU’RE THERE YOU CAN BUY AN ADVANCE TICKET FROM RA. MORE AVAILABLE ON THE DOOR FROM 11PM!

Focus on Gaiser

On Friday 21st November Sensu keep the momentum up with party number three of five of their 10th birthday celebrations.

They welcome Michigan music man Gaiser for an extra special live set to showcase his critically acclaimed False Light album. An avid and talented musician and an integral part of Richie Hawtin’s M_Nus label & Enter parties in Ibiza, this will be Gaiser’s debut appearance in Sub Club & Sensu and we can’t wait for this unrelenting groove lead live set, one that will most definitely keep you moving!

For anyone who doesn’t know and wants to, we thought we’d get to grips with some selected musical highlights from his career, and treat you to some of the best mixes and live sessions from his world on the web…

To give you a flavour we’re also linking to a couple of interesting press pieces, beginning with an interview for Cocoon who put it like this, “He’s a musician who lives off his instincts, channelling his moods and emotions directly into his computer, translating new experiences and sensations into sound. There simply is no other way.”

As far as Ibiza is concerned The first ENTER. party of 2013 took place on Thursday, July 4th. Resident Advisor streamed this live. Check out the recording below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyqI6MMiZsc

Gaiser has also worked with renowned Turkish artist and director Ahmet said Kaplan to develop interactive live visuals to complement the audio of his live show.

Since 2005, Gaiser has been at the heart of the minimal techno movement. However Jon recently took things to a new level. First up was this outstanding Essential Mix aired back in July live on BBC Radio 1.

https://soundcloud.com/tm-radio-mixes/gaiser-essential-mix-bbc-radio-1-05-jul-2014

Here he is talking to Awakenings Festival.

Only the other week Gaiser released False Light, his third artist album on Richie Hawtin’s label. The ten-track affair is a very complete and contemporary techno tale.

The new live show saw it’s debut at this years Amsterdam Dance Event.

Replete with exceptional drum patterns, melodies and distinct ethereal sounds this will be a multi-sensory experience with which to engage. Expect artfully spun percussive, synth, and bass from this force to be reckoned with.

This is a guy with endless talents, musically he is up there with the best. Here he is on some Boiler Room DJ Set business…

Sensu’s 10th birthday celebrations on Friday represents a long overdue Sub Club debut so let’s give Minus’s main man a right good Glasgow welcome…

Advance tickets are on sale HERE and more available on the door from 11pm.

Chewin’ the fat with the Sensu crew

Over the weekend the Sub Rosa clan sat down for a brew and a chit chat with the men behind one of Glasgow’s longest running and most respected club nights – SENSU.  After three years running their weekly Wednesday night affairs in Sub Club, it has admittedly taken them to long to coax the Sensu mob down to their midweek party. But this week see’s the long wait come to an end as SENSU’s Barry Price and Junior join Sub Rosa’s Spittal & Nowicki for a right old knee’s up. In between their hectic 5 part, 10th birthday bonanza, Sensu sat down with Sub Rosa and divulged some tricks of the trade.

Sub Rosa: First up, give us a heads up on how it all began?

“It’s all really came from very simple beginnings. There was a small basement club called Q club on Ingram Street that held maybe 120 people. We printed up loads of flyers (I mean loads), rounded up all our friends and had a party. It’s a common story, but we enjoyed it so much we really didn’t want to stop. It’s very hard to establish yourself as a Dj and when your 20 years old, no one is knocking down your door to play records for them so the best way is to do your own party and make your own decisions. We then continued from there to our second home The Liquid Lounge. At this point we started booking guests and getting more emotionally and financially involved in Sensu. But it’s always the same idea regardless.

https://soundcloud.com/sensu_glasgow/sets/sensu-is-10

Put on the best party possible with guest and soundtrack for the night that excites us. And then we moved to Sub Club………..”

Sub Rosa: Even though we have ran our night for three years and it seems like forever to us, we can hardly imagine what it must be like nursing your baby that is Sensu for 10.. What do you think the secret to your longevity is?

“Who knows. It’s fun. So we tend to put more of ourselves in to it, so it still feels like quite a personal night, kind of like Cheers (if anyone is old enough to remember the programme), everybody knows everybody’s name. That way everyone feels part of the night. As if they themselves have as much of a say as the promoters. Dj’s, club owners. And they do. Without the crowd you’re nothing. Basically just some guys that like electronic music.  I also think we have been cautious not to over extend ourselves. We will do roughly 12 parties a year and try to make each one more of an event in order to give people something to look forward to.”

Cheers.jpg

Sub Rosa: Over the years you’ve had some seriously interesting and respected guests. The two that stand out for us would be Ricardo Villalobos & Loco Dice.  Who’s been your favourite guest? And what was Ricardo like? We all know he has a bit of a reputation for going heavy on the shandy’s…

“First off, it would be impossible to name a favourite guest. We could write a book about each artist and the good time had with each. As for Ricardo, it always special when he’s played for us. What’s he like? He is a total music head. He will talk to you for long time about music and always be interested in what you are saying. As a DJ he has absolutely no fear. He’ll play what he feels and he rarely ever gets it wrong. He is a massive influence. He is always very complimentary and kind. A true innovator in our eyes.”

RV SENSU

Sub Rosa: Sensu is also known for its great secret parties around the city. We remember one of the first nights we brought all our pals down to Sensu and it was Guy Gerber & Mott Tolfrey. The atmosphere, crowd and the afters perhaps made it one of the most special nights we’ve ever experienced in Glasgow or anywhere for that matter. I think we were all a bit in awe after that one. Do you boys have anything else like that planned soon? Or is that in a top secret document in Sensu HQ?

SENSU-480x375 (1)

“That was an amazing party. It Was also one of those after parties that you didn’t want to end (b2b with Matt Tolfrey went on and on). I’m going to have to avoid this questions, but yes have something big planned for the last of our 10th birthday celebrations. We shall announce it in the coming weeks.”

Sub Rosa: Finally, here’s one to get you thinking. As your celebrating your tenth birthday, could we trouble you for a tune for each year that you feel was fitting for the SENSU sound and how its evolved?

It would be hard to give it 1 track for each year as all the music and years have basically merged in to one. Plus my memory is abhorrent. But I’ll list some older “unclassics”. Some tracks that are maybe a little less obvious for people that come to Sensu, but definites for all the residents.

This song is just supreme.

Trentemoller was out first ever guest. He’d only released a few records and we jumped straight on him. This was the one that done it for us. It sounded like nothing else being made at the time.

Quality techno track. Raresh played this the first he graced the Sub Club.

Luciano at his best.

The little subtle melodies in this are so good. From 3.50min onwards shit gets really nice.

Such a thumpy little belter of a tune.

Need to start playing this out again.

Used to love this record to death. Still do, maybe. :)

Bang

No words needed for this.
