EDMX Krew’s top 10 Robot Voice Funk Tracks

Freaky Freaky and Deadly Rhythm are joining forces this Friday to present EDMX, one of the most intriguing and exciting individuals in electronic music. With a career spanning almost 20 years, he’s had releases on the likes of Rephlex, Poplot and International Deejay Gigolo Records.

Despite being best known for his hard-hitting electro tinged club tracks, he’ll be gracing the Subbie booth for a special boogie set å la ‘We Are DMX’ (Rephlex Records 1999). We asked him to have a look inside his crate ahead of his performance and this is what he came back with…

Zapp – Dancefloor

Roger Troutman on the talkbox, drops even harder than “more bounce to the ounce”.

Jefferson Ink – Girl You Turn Me On

Much Sweated Texas vocoder bomb.

Vernon Burch – Do It To Me

One of the theme tunes of our London “Fresh Up” parties, greasy funk with robot voice.

Ose – Computer Funk

Restrained, stripped down and very funky DXJ collaboration from Miami.

Otis Clay & Louis XIV – Love Bandit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQQ0DpG94uQ
Awesome vocoder mix of this funky smasher.

X-Ref – Dream Six-O

Funky robot music from one of the many aliases of John Davis.

Videeo – Closet Freak (Special Mix)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg8GZYTLvZc
Very funky jam from out of Houston with 100% robot vocals.

Herbie Hancock – I Thought It Was You

Smooth and jazzy but funky too with the most soulful vocoder performance you will ever hear.

Kraftwerk – Die Roboter

Funky German robots dancing in nightclubs.

Formula V – Killer Groove

Rich Cason, the absolute don of stripped back west coast electro funk, made this blinding jam for formula V.

If this list is anything to go by, we’re in for a treat on Friday.  Last of the Advance Tickets available here…

Harri’s Summertime Selections

Summertime — the season for rooftop parties, afternoon road-trips to the beach, festival hype on Croatian coastlines, Balearic boat parties, relaxing holidays, and west end BBQs.

At Subculture we have our very own musical vibe specialist who is king of the beach breaks. To close off the summer happenings after a hectic few months of sunshine and with a Glaswegian style Indian summer very unlikely, we got Harri to reveal his favourite non-Subculture seasonal tracks. Enjoy his picks…

Here we have been blessed with Harri’s saucy Subculture activity recorded by David Attenborough’s sound crew ahead of John Talbot’s mid summer appearance back in July. This will be more than enough to get you in the mood for this Saturdays’s residents session and indeed any Subculture event…

Sub Focus on Dyed Soundorom

Fresh from their appearance at Dimensions in Croatia and following a hectic summer of playing at boat parties and festivals, this Friday the 20th of September, Sensu returns to the Sub Club. For this event, we will be joined by one of the most exciting and in demand DJs in the underground scene today, DC10 resident & rework specialist Dyed Soundorom.

Dyed wiggled his way into our collective consciousness in 2009/2010, earning a reputation as a DJ and producer worth checking out with some formidable releases on Freak’n’Chic and Crosstown rebels. Since then The Apollonia label boss has done so much to shape the underground house sound in Paris, Ibiza and beyond.

Dyed Press Shot

As the night approaches and for anyone who doesn’t know and wants to, we thought we’d get to grips with some selected musical highlights from his career, and treat you to some of the best mixes and live sessions from him his world on the web…

The Apollonia label trio which he co runs with his Parisian vibe brothers, known as Shonky and Dan Ghenacia are near the end of their season residency at infamous Ibizan haven DC-10. As part of the original ibiza raving crew Dyed has been around the Baleric block a few times. Check out this interview with Soundwall where Dyed reminisces over DC-10 days gone by.

First up on the music front here is a recording of Dyed’s set in the main room at Circo Loco from back in July:

Sticking to the White Isle here is his Ibiza villa Boiler Room takeover where he stepped up alongside Jamie Jones:

For his debut EP on Apollonia, Daze Maxim’s ‘Farbfilm’ was given some Soundorom remix treatment that added an Apollonia touch to this hypnotic house gem driven by deep bass and multi-layered synth notes that. An true example of his remix abilities and renowned style when it come to composition…

Back in June Mixmag streamed the debut EP from Apollonia as a trio. Entitled ‘Trinidad/Visa Americain.’

Read over this Fabric Sleeve Note Feature as the Apollonia boys handpick some of the influences and inspirations behind their fabric 70 that became some essential Sensu listening over the long summer days just gone by.

When he is not busy in the studio or the dj booth Dyed spends his time checking out other happening in the industry. He has even tried his hand at some music journalism endeavours. Check out his ‘Le Blog‘ where he keeps track of his festival and partying activities.

This is a personal favourite at Sensu HQ, it may be a year old but this Mixmag DJ Lab session is one of the best in the archives. A true showcase of one of the best house and techno dj’s to come on to the scene in recent times! Enjoy!!

Sensu resident Iggie is on support duties. He is easily one of the city’s best djs. So much so, every time Sensu favourite Loco Dice is in town, he personally asks for Senior to warm up for him due to his skills in the box. Here is one of his hard to come by promo compilations…

Why Did the Tiger Get Lost in the Jungle? Cos the JUNGLE IS MASSIVE!

Glasgow! A city growing in reputation for providing the nation with internationally renown DJs. But it’s not all house and techno. For all you serious bass-heads out there, we are proud to announce the return of the Frogbeats jungle sessions to Sub Club this Fresher’s week, Thursday 19th September – and will be carrying on bi-monthly until May 2014.

‘Unleash the Beast’ (UTB) has held a regular residency in SubClub since December 2011 helping spearhead the rebirth of the Glaswegian drum&bass/jungle scene. During this time the boys have hosted a variety of guest DJs, who have pumped out everything from old-school jungle, hip-hop, dubstep, breakcore and raggatek (and all that comes in-between!) as part of our sacred mission to entertain the west coast junglist massive who descend down to Jamaica Street.

Each instalment offers clubbers the ideal environment to get loose and skank the night away in SubClub’s famed techno dungeon, surrounded by smoke and tribal décor. This year promises to bring to the fore an even greater variety of local DJs and guest MCs. Kicking off this year’s session with a bang will be established residents DENNEY, RIZE and PHARO who promise to turn the system up full throttle. There will be a touch of dub and reggae added to the equation, as we welcome upcoming outfit CC SOUNDS to their Sub Club debut, as well as a very special demonstration from MC JAYSPLIFF DUBULO on ‘How to Tear Up a Mic’.

To get you warmed up and to give you an idea of the tunes in store this Thursday UTB co-founder and resident Pharo has put together this, relatively tame, all-vinyl DnB mix for your aural pleasure…

Marquis Hawkes Subculture Mix

Since forcing his way onto the scene in late 2012 with his ‘Cabrini Green EP’ for Glasgow label Dixon Avenue Basement Jams, the rough and rugged techno and house productions of the deliberately mysterious Marquis Hawkes have been grabbing the attention of some notable DJs and making a noise on dance floors as a consequence.

Looking forward to his Subculture debut this weekend alongside Harri & Dom and also a live set from one of house musics’ true pioneers Delano Smith, we have an exclusive ‘Subculture’ mix from the camera shy Berlin resident to share with you. We’re sure you’ll enjoy this skilful blend of the old and the new, the deep along with the energetic, ahead of what promises to be an exceptional night at the club on Saturday.

MH Subculture DSC_0052 copy

Marquis has been no stranger to the recording studio lately, with a spate of releases expected in the next few months and big things anticipated in the foreseeable future. Here he is on the remix tip for another Subculture friend…

Neville Watson – Against The Grain (Marquis Hawkes remix)

As big fans here at Subbieville, we look forward to hearing more action with his Mome remix on 4Lux, and a special remix for the late Romanthony due out on Glasgow Underground.

There are still £10 advance tickets available here to catch him & Delano Smith live alongside Harri & Domenic at Subculture this Saturday.

Animal Farm : Search & Destroy

Animal Farm return to The Sub Club tonight bringing two of the UK’s heaviest Techno hitters Regis & Shifted in tow. For this piece, AF’s Quail picks out a few of his favourites from Regis’ back catalogue. Some originals, remixes and collaborations feature, all of which are marked with the distinct, industrial ‘Birmingham’ sound that Regis was so influential in developing.

Shifted has also contributed his current top ten tracks, highlighting new material from Vatican Shadow, Tropic Of Cancer, Morphosis, Planetary Assault Systems and his own Avian label.

Quail’s Regis Picks:

Regis – We Said No [DOWNWARDS]

Taken from his first LP back in ’96 this is pure unadulterated Regis. Raw, hypnotic, industrial and hard as nails, this is machine music set at the most hectic pace.

Regis – Ital [DOWNWARDS]

https://youtu.be/1hKIYeCDSKI

Purely because this was the first Regis/Downwards record I ever bought. Found myself staring down the barrel of a gun with this one.

Female – Untitled (Regis Remix) [SANDWELL DISTRICT]

Regis remixes Downwards co-owner Peter Sutton aka Female….dark, brooding broken beats in the minimalistic Sandwell Style.

British Murder Boys – Burn Your Way In [DOWNWARDS]

A furious onslaught from Surgeon & Regis here. Melodic in parts but saturated in distortion leading to a blistering output. Probably one of the hardest kick drums I’ve heard!

Ben Klock – Sub Zero (Regis_Function Remix) [OSTGUT]

https://youtu.be/l_K4wqq8Qdo

The original of this gets played pretty much every time at Animal Farm however the collaborative efforts of Regis & Function create a subtle, stripped backed remix which harks to the peak of their Sandwell District days.

Shifted’s Current Top 10

Shifted

1. Vatican Shadow – Remember Your Black Day – Hospital Productions

2. 400ppm – Occupational Exposure – Avian

3. Terrance Fixmer – Subspace Two

4. Planetary Assault Systems – No Exit – Mote Evolver

These picks range from Mills’ reinterpretation of Changes Of Life, to classic Carl Craig with Berlin vibes via Italojohnson. More modern slices from Radio Slave (along side his Cabin Fever alias), Le Loup and Reboot also feature…

Family Values – Staying True with Telford

Staying true to their creed that it’s not big names but the music that matters, this Saturday 24th of August the residents will be joined by the young face but now familiar figure of Telford. Fresh and local, we’re keeping it in the Subculture family.

In 2001, while his friends were still out playing football and getting excited about girls (and possibly boys), a fourteen year old called Telford, was buying House records and probably being picked on for being a nerd and calling himself by his surname.

telford_15

The mid noughties saw this young man all grown up and firmly ensconced in the Sub Club but behind the bar rather than behind the decks. However post-pint pulling and with ready access to bend the ears of the leading lights of House, an opportunity to play records in a real club wasn’t slow in presenting itself.

Now still only 27, he is already an accomplished Subculture resident, playing alongside Jeff Mills, Larry Heard, Theo Parrish, Âme et al. and of course Harri & Domenic. From sets at Sonar in Barcelona to epic eight hour sets in Berlin’s Katerholzig his name is a welcome addition to line ups at underground clubs throughout Europe and the UK. Here he is alongside Ali Ooft! on remix tip with ESA…

https://soundcloud.com/rememory_music/luxarama-midnight-marauders-mix

Reluctant to speak about himself, he prefers to let his imaginative sets do the talking. Concentrating on creating a feeling and building a groove, his diverse use of house and techno can draw even the most recalcitrant feet onto the dance floor. Singularly minded, committed to his craft and almost puritanical in his purpose, he concentrates solely on being a DJ in the truest sense. Perceptive of his audience, brave, innovative and not afraid to take a risk, he plays with the single aim of taking the night somewhere special.

A DJ who plays music to make people dance. What could be more wonderful than that?

He has recorded this Subculture Mix as a snapshot of what to expect this Saturday. After listening back, it’s hard to pick out a favourite track with so many excellent examples of his musical style.

https://soundcloud.com/subclub87/mp3-telford

We are sure this mix will become an instant favourite. Enjoy….
