Focus on Tama Sumo

Profiling and overemphasis of biographies is often unnecessary, making it hard to write about certain artists. In many cases this is a good thing. Take this Saturdays’ Subculture guest Kerstin Egert (Tama Sumo) for example. With no obvious production career and only one notable commercial output on CD. Tama is however very highly rated amongst her peers and is now well and truly recognised as one of Europe’s best DJs. There are no gimmicks or games with Tama, she is simply an out and out expert when it comes to playing House & Techno records.

As the night approaches and for anyone who doesn’t know and wants to, we thought we’d get to grips with some selected musical highlights from her career, and treat you to some of the best mixes and live sessions from the archives…

Although she is more recently of Panorama Bar fame, Tama Sumo started playing out in the early ‘90s at local Berlin spots, Kreuzberg’s Drama and Café Moskau, and later ended up a firm fixture at the citys’ legendary club Tresor.

Musically she is very diverse which sits her sound half way up the steps between the dark depths of the Berghain and the towering house setting of Panorama Bar. Her recent sets would easily be described as more House than Techno but either way, we are expecting a lot of bass from this week’s Subculture debutant.

In September 2009, she recorded a compilation CD for her residency at Panorama Bar. This is a true classic which features a very rare track which was produced as a collaboration with her good friend, fellow pub quiz host, and another Sub Club favourite, Prosumer. This track also featured as the B Side to Marcel Dettmann’s ‘Helix’ on The Diamond & Pearls EP Phantasma Vol.3.

The following year Tama Sumo and Prosumer both chatted to DJ Bag ahead of a joint festival appearance at the Jazz not Dead festival in Vicenza, North East Italy.

Those industry leading specialists in the know over at FACT Mag asked Tama Sumo to recorded this mix. It’s been a favourite inside the Subbie HQ since it dropped into our snail mail back in 2012…

Here she is on some remix duties with a more tribal vibe created for Mary Boyoi. This summertime beach anthem was a big hit from the Süd Electronic Imprint.

As we know here at Subculture, there is nothing quite like a good old Boiler Room session to showcase your shit to tastemakers and party people who don’t live just up the road, via the world wide web. Here is a double helping from Tama Sumo live on Boiler Room TV…

This one is a pretty special daytime edition live from her own flat. You can’t get more House music than this…

With appearances at all of the best clubs around Europe already under her belt, this Saturday represents a long overdue Sub Club debut so let’s give Berlin’s first lady of house a right good Glasgow welcome.

Advance tickets are on sale from RA or TICKETS SCOTLAND and more will also be available on the door from 11pm…
