Show caught up with Rowan Jones aka Route 94 ahead of his return to the Sub Club. What better to talk to him about than a subject close to both our hearts (literally)… grub. We’re all daft on scran, so here goes…
What’s the weirdest thing you’ve eaten on your travels?
I’ve eaten kangaroo but I won’t be doing that again anytime soon, it’s disgusting and chewy!
Is there anything you wouldn’t eat?
Yeah bugs and shit. I would try snake though…I wouldn’t eat a rat and I wouldn’t eat bugs but I reckon I would be up for anything else!
Are you a big fan of the whole photographing all your meals for Instagram etc? Are you a fan of instagramm’n your dinner?
No but my girlfriend does it a lot when we are at dinner and I have to shout at her for it lol. Unless it looks epic and then I let her… but for me as soon as good food is in front of me I have to eat it, not sit there looking at it!
If you were on Death Row and you had to chose your last meal, what would it be? It can be anything and not limited to one single thing.
A margarita from Godfather, my local wood fire pizza place (it’s proper Italian pizza.) Then for mains, a fillet steak from Hawksmoor with triple cooked chips, stilton hollandaise and bone marrow as a side.
And then my Jamaican nan’s jerk chicken followed by honey glazed ribs from Hartwood in Tulum, Mexico. Then for pudding a nice deep fried Mars Bar with ice cream. I know it’s a lot of food but if I’m gonna die it has to be on a full stomach!
Do you cook? Do you have a signature dish to impress?
Yeah if I wasn’t a Musician I would be a chef, I’m always cooking…(in fact I’m cooking a hotdog right now whilst my girlfriend reads me the questions) I wouldn’t really have a signature dish, I enjoy cooking eeeeeverything. And here’s what I just made!…
Do you have any secret spots in London?
Somewhere no one else knows about. Yeah but if I told you it wouldn’t be a secret anymore…
What’s your perfect sandwich?
Ooohh….erm… A classic bacon sandwich with Ketchup. Always makes me feel fucking great at anytime of the day, week, month!
What’s your favourite nation’s food? Indian, Chinese, Italian etc.
French, but I love everything else too!
After club snack? Are you guilty? If so, what’s the one for you?
I never feel guilty! My ideal after club snack would be a burger and milkshake from Dirtyburger but it’s always too late so usually settle for room service. But to be honest most of the time it’s not food on the plate at the after party!
If there is one restaurant in the world you could eat at where would it be and why?
It would definitely be Faviken in Jarpen, Sweden. I watched a series called the Chef’s Table on Netflix (which I highly recommend you watch if you’re into food, or even if not, it’s still an interesting watch to get an insight into what goes into a successful restaurant) and this was my favourite episode… It was all about the head chef and founder Magnus Nilsson who sources all of the ingredients from his 20,000 acres of farmland. His dishes include things like warm marrowbone which is extracted from a cow’s shinbone using a two-man saw in the middle of the dining room. Legend!!
Route 94 is a firm favourite with the faithful and someone Show have wanted to book since their inception, it is with great pleasure to welcome him back to the Subbie.
