Line Up: Mark Farina // Illyus

Quite simply one of the great Sub Club greats and a well-loved luminary of ours to boot. If we had cause to build our own Hall Of Fame, Mark would find pride of place in its halls as one of the finest figures to ship-shape our sound and help cement a solid musical reputation. Originally from Chicago Mark’s formative windy city years were spent playing out with the bold Derrick Carter, leading to their classic bit of plastic ‘Mood’ as Symbol and Instruments before going on to become a founding member of San Francisco’s house music scene. His Mushroom Jazz series of releases spawned a now trademark sound, a club night by the name of Jazid Up and eventually an album on Om Records in October of 1996 which he went on to globally tour. A sunny west-coast style has seen him flourish ever since and we’ve always loved bringing him to you over the years. Clear your digital diary a make a date to get down to this man’s sounds once again.

Local selector Illyus is on support duties. Illyus’ story has more in common with New York producers such as Todd Terry and Kenny Dope than it does your average Glaswegian upcoming house producer. Originally a hip-hop dj, he worked his way into Glasgow’s clubs through the world of turntablism. Illyus’ breakthrough release was “The Issues EP” which Pete Tong played on the Essential Selection. A recent collaboration on Glasgow Underground with Barrientos “Do Anything You Wanna” and “The Times We Shared” has so far picked up support from a whole host of radio DJs with a support list that reads like a who’s who in house music right now.

With more and more labels now showing interest in Illyus’ work, 2014 should be a big year for the talented Govan boy.
